BMM Fundas

Don't want to continue mundane graduate courses like BSc, BA and Commerce? Think you have creative juices flowing in your blood?? Then BMM (Bachelor in Mass Media) could be just the course for you. This is a 3 year graduation course where all the subjects related to media are taught. In the 3rd year, you have the option of majoring in either Advertising or Journalism. The course is still in its infancy and 2003 will see the first graduates in BMM.

Syllabus:
Unlike Arts or Commerce, the first year of BMM has 12 subjects - six subjects per term. On request of the BMM faculty and the taking into consideration the advice given by top Advertising Personalities, the University has changed the syllabus (for the better). The revised subjects for 1st year are:
Semester-I
1. Effective Communication Skills-I 2. Macro Economics 3. Landmarks in 20th century history 4. Mass communication 5. Introduction To Computers 6. Introduction to Sociology

Semester - II
1. Effective Communication Skills-II 2. Introduction to Psychology 3. English Literature 4. Marketing 5. Political concepts and the Indian Political System 6. Principles of Management. In the 2nd year all other media related subjects like Copywriting, Radio, Photography etc. are present. There are compulsory internships for all 2nd year BMM students in the summer vacations. Colleges like Wilson and KC used to guarantee students with internships, but with the growing no of students in each college, finding internship positions is becoming a problem.
This year, most BMM students have had to find jobs through their own efforts/ contacts. Mumbai University had earlier stipulated that in the 4th semester students would have a choice between between Advertising and Journalism but it has been postponed to the 3rd year (5th and 6th semester). Basically, being a new course, the rules tend to keep changing. The course has extensive project work in each subject, which does tend to get hectic although students do gain a lot in terms of knowledge.

They not only learn to finish their assignments on time but also present it very creatively. Many colleges have professional visiting faculty - from companies, agencies or the media world. Bachelor of Mass Media is recognized by leading advertising agencies such as Lintas, O&M and Enterprise. This course in not as simple as many might perceive it to be and don't get into it thinking there is not much to study, theory is tough and there are many exhausting projects to complete. There's also this trend of BMM colleges having their own festival, which is an attraction as well as a distraction

Choosing a BMM college
Check out the teaching faculty and especially how many professional guest lecturers, workshops, industrial visits and projects were undertaken - it varies widely between colleges. For example, Wilson had 15 workshops and 25 professional guest lecturers while Andrews was found lagging behind on both counts. Also consider the college's influence in the advertising world (how many internships they could wrangle for their students), media equipment (like computers, cameras, video) etc and of course overall student's satisfaction.

Admission requirements:
The eligibility for this course is 10+2 from any stream with a compulsory 50% secured in the board exams.

Conclusion:
The placement prospects after BMM are uncertain. With over 700 BMM students enrolling last year (and more expected in the near future), most students may be in the same boat as your average BA/ BCom graduate ie searching for a "good" job. The top 20 ad agencies prefer MBAs/ MICA graduates for client servicing and copywriters will still be selected through a Copy Test.

Tip for students planning to enter journalism - write, write and write. The more articles you manage to get published the better your chance of landing a job right after BMM. Considering the boom in the TV industry, the course needs to pay more attention to that area.

MERCHANT NAVY

Introduction
The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. A career in this field is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Above all this, the excellent pay and promising promotional opportunities make the career lucrative and exciting in spite of all the hard work life and long absence from family and home.
The main positions open in the merchant navy are for navigating officers, radio officers and marine engineers. They are usually employed by shipping companies on a contractual basis, which is generally of six to nine months' duration. Earlier a career in this field was considered purely for men. Women were not generally known to take up jobs in merchant navy but the past few years have seen a positive change with many women taking up jobs as ship doctors and radio officers.

In Merchant Navy, major tasks performed are in three basic areas of a ship. The Deck, the Engine and the Service Department. There are thus, many career options that are available for any youngster who has dreams to join the merchant navy. The deck officers include the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers. The engine department consists of the chief engineer, radio officer, electrical officer and junior engineers. The service department manages the kitchen, laundry, medical and other services. Jobs are available with shipping companies in India and other countries.

Prominent institutes conducting courses in this field are TS Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), in Kolkata and Mumbai.

Eligibility: The minimum eligibility for courses in Nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics

Job Prospects
Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would grind to a halt. Therefore trained personnel is required for various departments of the ship and this widens the scope for employment in this field.

They are offered jobs in the following major areas :

By various shipping companies in the government and private sector.

Foreign shipping companies also offer good job prospects.

Career options

Deck Department

The Deck Officers: Deck officer or navigation officer as the name suggests is in charge of the navigation of the ship. That particular department is called Deck department. The captain or the master of the ship is in charge of the ship. He is not only responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel but also for the discipline on the ship and safety of passengers, crew and the cargo. He must ensure the observance of national and international codes of conduct guiding sea transportation. The captain of the ship is further assisted by first mate, second mate and third mates. The First Mate / Chief officer is the right-hand man to the Captain; the second in-command. He overseers all the cargo planning, assists during navigation, allocates duties and work for the maintenance and upkeep of the ship to the Deck Cadets and deck crew, ensures that discipline and order are maintained. The Second Mate / Second officer, assistant to the First Mate is in-charge of checking all mails and keeping the navigational equipment and charts in good condition and also assists in navigational watches at sea and cargo watches at port. The Third Mate / Third officer is responsible for keeping safety equipments -the lifeboats, firefighting and signaling equipment in top condition; acts in the capacity of signal officer and assists with cargo work.

The deck department also has other staff with specific duties called 'ratings'. They act as look outs and helmsmen, assist with the securing of the ship as it docks at ports and help clean tanks and holds before the cargo is placed in them.

Engine Department

Marine Engineers: Marine Engineers have the complete responsibility of the ship's engine room. The main personnel in this department is the Ship engineer/chief engineer who ensures safe and economic running of all engines, boilers, electrical, refrigerating and sanitary equipment, deck machinery and steam connections aboard the ship. He supervises the work of the engine-room crew and is assisted in his duties by the Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Engineers and other junior personnel.

Second engineer looks after the day to day work in the engine room. Third engineer is in charge of the main engine, spare parts for the main engine, all purifiers, boilers, compressors etc. Fourth and fifth engineers are in charge of the numerous generators onboard ship as well as certain small pumps.

Besides the officers of the navigation and engineering teams most ships have a Radio Officer and an Electrical officer. The Radio Officer is in charge of the radio room and handles the operation of the wireless and transmitting of signals. Electrical Officer is responsible for the functioning and handling of all electrical equipment onboard the vessel. There is another one named seaconny, who ensures that the ship is on course and that the gangway at port is well-guarded.

Service Department

The work undertaken here revolves around the living and catering services for all the crew on board. A chief steward heads a large team of stewards, bakers, messmen etc. Apart from this, the department also has other services such as the services of Divers for underwater examination of the heel of the ship, propellers, pipes etc. Light Keepers, who operate light house signaling equipment to guide incoming and passing ships, and Nautical surveyors, who prepare charts of particular regions of the seas, with regard to topography and conditions of the sea.

PROMOTION

MBA Information

  • Why Get An MBA?
    Here are some common reasons:

1) for advancement in a career in business

2) career change from one business field to another or into management or administrative position in another field (such as engineering, arts, nursing)

3) obtain skills and credibility for starting own business

4) specific career goal that "requires" an MBA (such as investment banking or management consulting)

5) specific management training

6) higher salary potential

  • How Long Does It Take?
Two full academic years, usually with an internship between the first and second years. Many schools have created more flexible and part-time options to accommodate the schedules of working students.
  • Curriculum
The traditional model consists of a first year of core general business classes and a second year of electives allowing specialization. Some schools offer a two-tier model, in which the core classes can be waived so that students can focus more on advanced classes. Some students with a business background can enter these programs in the second half. Also, there are both national and regional schools. National schools admit students from all over the U.S. They are more visible, offer more prestigious contacts, and are often more competitive. Regional schools recruit students from their geographic region and have strong ties with local employers. When researching programs, you may want to decide which is most important for you.
  • Factors to Consider When Researching Schools
Do advanced study courses fit your academic/career goals?
Can you take courses outside the business school?
What kinds of special programs are available (internships, entrepreneurship, projects with local companies)
What teaching method is used (lecture, case study, projects)?
Does teaching philosophy lean more toward theory or application?
Quality of faculty (research interests, areas of expertise)
    Class profile (age, diversity, etc.)
    Class size
    Career and job search services
    Location
    Relationship with real-world employers
    Cooperative vs. competitive environment
    Financial aid
  • Entrance Requirements
    1) Academic RecordThere is no particular undergraduate degree required. Only about half of MBA students nationwide have a business or economics degree. At UT's McComb's School of Business, 34% of last year's entering class had business degrees, 24% had liberal arts degree, and 42% had technical or science degrees. Many programs require calculus or statistics as evidence of quantitative skills.

2) GMAT - Graduate Management Admission TestThis exam includes verbal, qualitative, and analytical writing sections. It is a timed test given on computer. The score is reported on a 200 to 800 scale with an average score on 500. For more information, see the GMAT website. At UT, the average GMAT score for those who were accepted for 2006 was 673.

3) Work ExperienceIt is standard for many schools to require two years of work experience prior to admission. More competitive schools may even require more years of work. For example, last year's entering class at UT's McComb's School of Business had an average of five years of experience.
