Don't want to continue mundane graduate courses like BSc, BA and Commerce? Think you have creative juices flowing in your blood?? Then BMM (Bachelor in Mass Media) could be just the course for you. This is a 3 year graduation course where all the subjects related to media are taught. In the 3rd year, you have the option of majoring in either Advertising or Journalism. The course is still in its infancy and 2003 will see the first graduates in BMM.
Syllabus:
Unlike Arts or Commerce, the first year of BMM has 12 subjects - six subjects per term. On request of the BMM faculty and the taking into consideration the advice given by top Advertising Personalities, the University has changed the syllabus (for the better). The revised subjects for 1st year are:

Semester - II

In the 2nd year all other media related subjects like Copywriting, Radio, Photography etc. are present. There are compulsory internships for all 2nd year BMM students in the summer vacations. Colleges like Wilson and KC used to guarantee students with internships, but with the growing no of students in each college, finding internship positions is becoming a problem.
This year, most BMM students have had to find jobs through their own efforts/ contacts. Mumbai University had earlier stipulated that in the 4th semester students would have a choice between between Advertising and Journalism but it has been postponed to the 3rd year (5th and 6th semester). Basically, being a new course, the rules tend to keep changing. The course has extensive project work in each subject, which does tend to get hectic although students do gain a lot in terms of knowledge.
They not only learn to finish their assignments on time but also present it very creatively. Many colleges have professional visiting faculty - from companies, agencies or the media world. Bachelor of Mass Media is recognized by leading advertising agencies such as Lintas, O&M and Enterprise. This course in not as simple as many might perceive it to be and don't get into it thinking there is not much to study, theory is tough and there are many exhausting projects to complete. There's also this trend of BMM colleges having their own festival, which is an attraction as well as a distraction

Choosing a BMM college
Check out the teaching faculty and especially how many professional guest lecturers, workshops, industrial visits and projects were undertaken - it varies widely between colleges. For example, Wilson had 15 workshops and 25 professional guest lecturers while Andrews was found lagging behind on both counts. Also consider the college's influence in the advertising world (how many internships they could wrangle for their students), media equipment (like computers, cameras, video) etc and of course overall student's satisfaction.
Admission requirements:
The eligibility for this course is 10+2 from any stream with a compulsory 50% secured in the board exams.
Conclusion:
The placement prospects after BMM are uncertain. With over 700 BMM students enrolling last year (and more expected in the near future), most students may be in the same boat as your average BA/ BCom graduate ie searching for a "good" job. The top 20 ad agencies prefer MBAs/ MICA graduates for client servicing and copywriters will still be selected through a Copy Test.
Tip for students planning to enter journalism - write, write and write. The more articles you manage to get published the better your chance of landing a job right after BMM. Considering the boom in the TV industry, the course needs to pay more attention to that area.

He overseers all the cargo planning, assists during navigation, allocates duties and work for the maintenance and upkeep of the ship to the Deck Cadets and deck crew, ensures that discipline and order are maintained. The Second Mate / Second officer, assistant to the First Mate is in-charge of checking all mails and keeping the navigational equipment and charts in good condition and also assists in navigational watches at sea and cargo watches at port. The Third Mate / Third officer is responsible for keeping safety equipments -the lifeboats, firefighting and signaling equipment in top condition; acts in the capacity of signal officer and assists with cargo work.

He supervises the work of the engine-room crew and is assisted in his duties by the Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Engineers and other junior personnel.
Second engineer looks after the day to day work in the engine room. Third engineer is in charge of the main engine, spare parts for the main engine, all purifiers, boilers, compressors etc. Fourth and fifth engineers are in charge of the numerous generators onboard ship as well as certain small pumps.
Besides the officers of the navigation and engineering teams most ships have a Radio Officer and an Electrical officer. The Radio Officer is in charge of the radio room and handles the operation of the wireless and transmitting of signals. Electrical Officer is responsible for the functioning and handling of all electrical equipment onboard the vessel. Promotions in Merchant Navy: Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India, takes care of the training needs and conducts competency exam through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). 'Certificates of Competency' awarded by the DGS, is needed for promotion to the various respective classes.
Deck Department: A candidate joining as Deck cadet after finishing his bachelors in Nautical Science or through direct entry, is eligible to appear for his Second Officer/ Second Mate FG - Foreign Going Examination after 36 months of sailing. Lal Bahadur Shastry Nautical College, Mumbai which gives training for Second Officers Exam has made college attendance of 6 months compulsory to appear for the exam. Besides physics and Mathematics a student is tested in Ship stability and Construction, Meteorology, Principles and Practical navigation, Chart work; written as well as oral and the cadets knowledge of seamanship.
After completing 18 months of sailing time the third officer can appear for the Chief Officer/ First Mate Foreign Going Examination. Here again the candidate is required to attend 6 months classes in Lal Bahadur Shastry Nautical College, Mumbai. A further period of 18 months sailing time is required before a candidate can appear for Masters foreign Going Exam. The process of rising from a deck cadet to the master of a ship will take a minimum of at least 12 years.
Engineering Department: A candidate joining as Engine cadet/ Fifth Engineer officer/ Junior Engineer after finishing Bachelors in Marine Engineering is eligible to appear for class IV examination for promotion to the fourth Engineer or in some cases as Third Engineer. At UT's McComb's School of Business, 34% of last year's entering class had business degrees, 24% had liberal arts degree, and 42% had technical or science degrees. Many programs require calculus or statistics as evidence of quantitative skills.
2) GMAT - Graduate Management Admission TestThis exam includes verbal, qualitative, and analytical writing sections. It is a timed test given on computer. The score is reported on a 200 to 800 scale with an average score on 500. For more information, see the GMAT website. At UT, the average GMAT score for those who were accepted for 2006 was 673.
3) Work ExperienceIt is standard for many schools to require two years of work experience prior to admission. More competitive schools may even require more years of work. For example, last year's entering class at UT's McComb's School of Business had an average of five years of experience.

Applications are invited from unmarried candidates who fulfill eligibility, condition of Nationality as laid down by the Government of India for grant of Short Service Commission (SSC) in Technical Branches of the Indian Navy under University Entry Scheme (UES), for course commencing July 2010.
ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
Age: 19 to 24 years (i.e. born between 02 Jul 1986 to 01 Jul 1991, (both dates inclusive).
Educational Qualifications: Applicant should be studying in a recognised university with one of the following disciplines and should have obtained a minimum of 60 % aggregate marks till pre final year (upto VI semester): -
Note:- (a) (i) Candidates in their last semester (i.e. eighth semester) or qualified their BE/B Tech degree are not eligible for this entry and need not to apply.(ii) Candidate must have 60% marks in aggregate (I to VIII sem.) on passing Degree Certificate to be eligible for commission in the Indian Navy.(b) Women candidate can only apply for Naval Architecure Cadre.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS
The candidates must be physically fit according to following physical standards:-(a) Height and Weight. Minimum height - 157cms for men and 152 cms for women with correlated weight.(b) Eye Sight. 6/24, 6/24 correctable to 6/6 in each eye with glasses. The candidate should not be colour/night blind.
TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The selected candidates will be appointed in the rank of Sub- Lieutenant on the date decided by IHQ-MoD(Navy). The candidates will be granted Short Service Commission (SSC). The candidates will be subject to an initial probationary period which will commence from the date of grant of the rank of Sub-Lieutenant and will terminate after two years from the date of their reporting to the Indian Naval Academy. During the period from date of appointment to reporting for training, the individual will be entitled to half the basic pay of the rank, which will be payable as a lump-sum stipend at the time of joining Indian Naval Academy for training. The tenure of SSC officers will be for a period of 10 yrs, extendable by a further period of 04 yrs subject to service requirements and performance/willingness of the candidates. The Candidates who fail to qualify at the final graduation (aggregate 60%) will be discharged from service without any benefits.
